John McKean's journal chronicles his trip from New York to the Sandwich Islands, via California. McKean, of Charlestown, MA, sailed from New York on November 13, 1849 on the Steamship Crescent City. He arrived in San Francisco on December 29, 1849. He sailed again for the Sandwich Islands on April 10, 1840 aboard the Hawaiian Brigatine Kalama. He left the Sandwich Islands on May 25, 1850 aboard the Barque Connecticut, arriving in San Francisco on June 25. The last entry in the journal is dated December 12, 1850; it records the beginning of his return journey sailing from San Francisco to Panama.
